Arthur Shaw papers, 1917-1919.

The Arthur Shaw papers contain 38 letters written to his mother from April 1917 through May 1919. Several of the postwar letters contained enclosures; these include a German coin, a photograph (presumably of Captain Shaw on horseback), postcards, and a congratulatory notice from General Headquarters.

Unlike many volunteer soldiers during the First World War, Arthur Shaw already had a wife and child as well as a successful career before he enlisted in the military. Due to his numerous years of engineering experience, Shaw was quickly promoted to Captain of the 301st Engineers.
